Purpose & Mission
Our Purpose is to provide communication and support to the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender community at NC State University. All undergraduate and graduate students are welcome to participate in all our activities. We welcome input and stories from our alumni, and we look forward to working with affirming faculty and administrators.
Our Mission is to cultivate a campus environment that provides a safe and positive college experience for all students regardless of perceived or realized sexual orientation or gender identity.
History
LGSU was founded in 1988 as the first student organization dedicated to the needs of LGBT students at NCSU. Initially established to provide a social network for LGBT persons, BGLA grew into a role that provided both social activities as well as advocacy for the community. BGLA continued to grow throughout the 1990s helping to establish groups at UNC-Chapel Hill and Duke. In the early part of this decade BGLA championed discrimination policy changes made under Chancellor Mary Anne Fox, and helped draft a university response to LGBT aimed violence in the wake of the Matthew Shepard tragedy.
