Aldrich
From WolfWikis
Aldrich is the generic term for:
- The printed Aldrich Advancing Science chemical reference book, or
- The online version of the reference book, at sigma-aldrich.com.
Contents |
Uses
Aldrich is easy to use, contains basic information on thousands of chemicals, and is freely available online, so it's a good first stop for quick chemical information: pricing, properties, structures, formulae. Sigma-Aldrich is a vendor of these chemicals, so the catalog only contains substances they sell.
Online version
Search for chemicals by name, CAS number, or other criteria. It can be a little confusing after conducting a search if you are presented with numerous results--most are just different varieties of a single chemical. For well-known chemicals, spectra and MSDS information are linked within the record. Price information requires registration, but this can be bypassed.
Below is a sample of the kind of data you might find in the online Aldrich handbook. This entry has some property information, price, and links (upper right) to several spectra and MSDS. On most entries, scroll down for other property data, references, and hazard and safety information.
Print version
Pages are in alphabetical order by chemical name. Easy to use and very well cross-referenced when looking up names. Safety information and legend at the front of the book.
CH223L student information
Start the literature search assignment by finding your chemical in Aldrich. At minimum, you'll get the CAS number and price. You may also be able to get some synonyms, properties, the formula and structure, and some safety information. The online version of Aldrich sometimes has links to spectra and an MSDS.
Your chemical MUST be in Aldrich in order to complete the literature search assignment in a straightforward manner. The chemicals for this assignment were all originally pulled from Aldrich to ensure that all students would have:
- a reliable way to find the chemical by name (Aldrich should use the name you were assigned)
- an ORGANIC chemical
- a chemical with information available in common resources
If your chemical isn't in Aldrich, contact your instructor to request a new one. You can still complete the assignment with inorganic or lesser-known chemicals, but those are outside the scope of this course.
