Analyze tool

From WolfWikis

Jump to: navigation, search

The Analyze Tool can be found in several databases, prominently in Web of Science and SciFinder. It is used to break out your search results into meaningful categories to help narrow broad searches.

It is similar to the Refine tool found in both databases, and both tools can be effectively used together.

SciFinder

Look for the Analyze area on the right of your search results. (Desktop client version: Click the Analyze/Refine button at the bottom of the search results screen.)

  1. Analyzing can help you better understand your results or pick out relevant facts. Some examples of useful ways to analyze:
    1. Select Author Name to identify key authors on this research topic.
    2. Select Journal Name to identify key journals on this research topic.
    3. Select Index Term to break down the results by CAS' controlled vocabulary. This is a way to limit your results by particular subjects. Many modern interfaces present subject facets more prominently in the display results. This accomplishes the same task, you just have to dig to find it.
  2. The results are clickable links if you have less than 15000 results - in which case the analysis is just a sample. Consider refining your search!
  3. You can continue to analyze and refine to further narrow the list.

Refining lets you add more search criteria, or check only the results you want (for example, in the case of Language). Use this when you get too many results to easily look through.
