Elements

There are a little over 100 elements but quite a few of them are pretty rare. Below are some of the most common ones. You do need to know the names of those and their symbols. You also need to familiarize yourself with their position in the periodic table, because that tells you a lot about the kind of chemistry you should expect for that element.

The tables below are intended to help you memorize name and symbols. Hover with your mouse over the symbol and the name will pop up.

Notice that the symbols are always uppercase (like C) sometimes followed by a lowercase (like Cu or Co), the names of the elements (like carbon, cobalt or copper) are in lowercase in English.

For many elements the symbols are abbreviations of the English name (like C for carbon), but in some cases they are actually abbreviations from the Latin name (like Sb for stibium=antimony) and so they are not quite so obvious.

Naming exercise

Pick a symbol at random and say the element name aloud, then hover mouse over the symbol and check that it is right. Correct yourself if necessary. Keep doing it until you no longer make mistakes.

Symbol exercise

This exercise goes the other way around. Say the symbol, then hover over the name of the element. Don't stop until you know them all.

Position exercise

Here are the same elements as above but some of the symbols are blanked out. See how well you can predict where a certain element is in the table.
