CH 765 Chemistry of Materials

This course is focussed on the relationship between chemical structure and physical properties with potential use in applications. Different classes of molecules and materials requirements for several applications will be emphasized. These pages will be for us to jointly collect and describe the elements behind our study. We'll define/explain the basics to start.

  2. Polymer Synthesis and Properties
  3. Nanoparticles
  4. Soft Lithography
  5. Organic LEDs

Fundamental ideas

In our class, we study various types of materials that often seem to be completely different from one another. However, there are principles governing their synthesis, structure and stability that are common to many if not all of the types. This section aims to identify these governing principles, to define them in general and then to provide examples where these governing principles are important.

  1. Thermodynamics -- entropic and enthalpic considerations
  2. Kinetics -- entropic and enthalpic considerations
  3. Nucleation and growth
  4. Defect-mediated processes
