CRD 704\Technologies
From WolfWikis
During the Fall 2007 semester, we've tried multiple technologies in order to gain exposure to them, and also to ascertain their applicability to pedagogy. Below is a sampling of the technologies we've tried, with some notes on our experiences with each one.
- blogs
- Each of us maintains a blog to reflect on course readings.
- del.icio.us
- Google Docs
- Microsoft Word
- We tested out capabilities of the program that could be used even if computers are not networked. For example, one student could start writing from a prompt. After students switch computers, another student could select one line from the other student's work and write based on that line. Track changes and insert comments also provide useful tools, particularly in writing classes.
- myspace
- The general consensus was that we couldn't see how to use myspace in class.
- Second Life
- We created avatars and visited the Gardens of Bliss. We learned some basics, such as how to transport to other locations, how to move our avatars, how to use some of the chat features, and what can be stored in inventory. We will revisit Second Life later in the semester.
- Vista (chat and discussion boards)
- Social annotation applications:
- Diigo http://www.diigo.com
- PageFlecks http://www.pageflecks.com
- ClipMarks http://www.clipmarks.com
- Questions:
- 1. What are the most useful features of the application?
- 2. What are the disadvantages?
- 3. How could you use this application in a teaching/learning environment?
- 4. Would you use this application in your own teaching?
