Chemical literature is the broad term for published research in the field of chemistry. In includes, but is not limited to:

• books
• articles published in refereed journals
• conference proceedings
• patents
• published talks
• technical reports
• standards
• theses/dissertations
• grey literature

It may even include less academic media, such as newspaper or magazine articles.

Overviews

Kirk-Othmer and Ullmann's are recommended for topical overviews in many instances.

Finding chemical literature

The broadest coverage of chemical literature available to the NCSU community is found in SciFinder Scholar. Chemistry researchers should learn to use this database. Ask the chemistry librarian if you need assistance.

Web of Science is a good alternative to SciFinder. It doesn't have the same chemical literature depth, but indexes all major journals and is a lot easier to use.

Other chemistry databases are listed on the NCSU Libraries' chemistry subject page. Many specialize in other types of chemical information, such as physical properties.
