ChemNetBase is the electronic version of several frequently-used chemistry and physics handbooks. It includes:

Choosing a database within ChemNetBase

To get started, you must select which online book(s) to search. For many tasks, the Combined Chemical Dictionary is the best option since it searches across several resources at once. Users familiar with the CRC Handbook of Chemistry and Physics, or users interested in polymers (and therefore interested in Polymers: A Property Database), may want to start with those titles instead.

Using the database

The following instructions apply to the Combined Chemical Dictionary (CCD) (and titles within) and the Properties of Organic Compounds.

  • Enter a known identifier, such as CAS number (recommended) or the chemical name. You can also search by structure (will require plugin download).
  • Click the Search button.
  • A list of matches will be displayed. Usually there will be only one result if you search for a specific CAS number or name, but multiple results may show up if your search was ambiguous. Note that the name displayed may not match the name you searched. Since one chemical can have many synonyms, the name you are using may not match the primary chemical name recognized by ChemNetBase. (This is why CAS number searching is a good idea.)
  • Click the chemical name to see information. By default, it shows up in a pop-up window, so you may need to turn off pop-up blocking.
  • ChemNetBase generally provides synonyms, structure, various physical properties, and references to other information. This all depends on what's available for the chemical.
