Cited reference search
From WolfWikis
Cited reference searching is a method of obtaining a list of cited papers for a given author within Web of Science.
Reasons to conduct a cited reference search
Certainly different researchers can use this data differently, and general searches within Web of Science can get you to some of the same data, but some common uses are:
- Locating a specific article and the number of citations, especially as compared to other work by the same author.
- Tallying citations for a specific author.
- Locating citation errors.
Conducting a cited reference search
From the initial screen in Web of Science, click Cited Reference Search, or the Cited Reference Search button.
Enter relevant information for your search. In this examples, we're looking for an author's particular paper from 1966:
Searching results in a list like this:
This is a list of all papers by L. Armijo published that year and indexed in Web of Science databases. Available records are links. This example shows how many errors can crop up in citation indexing. Note the most obvious one--his article in the Pacific Journal of Mathematics. One line shows 254 citations to the paper in volume 16, while three other entries report citations to an article published in the same journal, same year, only with different or absent volume numbers.
- Yes, in fact, these other three lines are errors. Perhaps the citations report the wrong volume number or text from the articles scanned or were entered incorrectly. The error and its correction are clear in this situation, but this may not always be the case, especially if you are unsure of the citation. (Note: Thomson will correct these errors in the database upon request.)
