Colombian Guerrilla Groups Involved in Kidnapping
From WolfWikis
Most of the Guerilla armies in Colombia are leftist. This stems from a period in Colombian history known as La Violencia. After leftist leader and Presidential candidate, Jose Eliecer Gaitán was assassinated in 1948, a riot began in Bogota and spread throughout the nation. As a conservative government siezed power, leftist forces maintained violence in the countryside creating chaos. The 18 year period known as La Violencia took the lives of an estimated 200,000 people. More Conservative leaders have been in power since then and leftist groups have flourished in the incredibly poor rural areas of Colombia.
There are several notable groups who commit the majority of kidnappings in Colombia. The three most well known and prolific are the AUC, the ELN, and the FARC.
