- "Digital Pens" A lot of folks bring laptops to class these days and type like mad, but some students still prefer the feel of pen and paper. Luckily, with digital pens, students can enjoy the clarity of type written notes without giving up their cherished pad and paper. Digital pens (which run $50-$125) remember everything you write on your piece of paper and store the data inside the pen. When you get home, connect it to your computer via USB and download your handwritten notes as a graphic.

The more expensive models, such as the Logitech's io Pen ($195), can convert your handwritten notes directly into text when you use a special dotted "smart paper." The computer analyzes your chicken scratch and converts it into editable text that you can paste straight into Microsoft Word. Plus, the smart paper comes in various forms: notebooks, Post-it Notes, and more.--Heather 21:05, 26 September 2006 (EDT)

Philosophical Meanderings (aka "Deep Thoughts")

- I think it is important to consider whether students are "plugged in" (which has a positive connotation) or "plugged up" (which suggests that nothing else permeates over the music, phone call, etc.). This gets right at the heart of the debate about the impact of technology on students - positive, negative or neutral (or all the above?). --Ladare 16:40, 20 September 2006 (EDT)

-On October 2nd, the Technician ran an article about students protesting regarding the new tailgating implications. There was an extra article within the main article discussing Facebook and the information it is providing. This is an excellent current example of how students are using technology that is positive and effective towards a cause. Student Government created a group on Facebook to do extra advertising for the protest rally. This example demonstrates how technology can be used to reach a larger audience in a short amount of time. This is the first time I have seen a technological approach to student activism, which might be the future for student activism. While the article talks about what kind of information is on Facebook, as Student Affairs professionals it is important for us to recognize the implications of technology without it being spelled out beforehand. Again, it is on the front page of the October 2nd issue. --epellis 20:38, 09 October 2006 (EDT)

-Is blue tooth a fad that is ready to die out? Although this technology is advanced and is the cool in theory, how often does blue tooth get used. In order to use the blue tooth printers, you must have a blue tooth connection in another device whether it is a cell phone or blackberry. Even if there is that option, how good is the connection and how efficient can that connection be versus a "regular" printer-computer connection. Blue tooth does not seem to be pratical besides the cell phone and headset. The cell phone blue tooth usage is the most popular, but one most consider how cost is affecting everyone to have a cell phone and blue tooth headset. In my opinion, blue tooth is on it's way out as the new thing. Sometimes too complicated or hi-tech equipment ends up being more of a problem than a solution. --epellis 21:10, 09 October 2006 (EDT)

- As we have discussed frequently, technology seems to be everywhere and continues to impact our daily professional routines in new ways almost every day. Students multi-task with a variety of techologies but what does that really mean for the student affairs profession? I was told early in my graduate program that, "we are training you to assess the personal situations of our students and make appropriate interventions in their lives that lead to development, either cognitively, socially or both." If that's what we are trained to do, how do we do that over email or IM?? Can we really impact a student's cognitive development with a well-crafted text message? How do we balance the technological with the interpersonal?--Jrmountz 22:39, 10 October 2006 (EDT)

Who's responsible for teaching students appropriate use of the internet? In discussing issues of academic integrity and negative uses of online social services like facebook which is now open for high school students, shouldn't these "digital natives" be taught about technology and how to maintain honest academic work and safe social networking before they come to college? What are secondary schools doing to educate students on technology which is increasingly becoming part of today's students' classroom and home experiences.--Krdangel 16:49, 3 November 2006 (EST)

I came across this article Holiday Gizmo Shopping Made Wackyand I am placing it in this section only because it does not provide any direct insight to student affairs, but rather it got me thinking. The article states that these new technology "gadgets may be useless" other than entertainment purposes. I think that it will be interesting to see if college students are attracted to these gadgets. I also feel that this article brings up a good question, what are we using technology for? Are we, including in the student affairs arena, using technology because we have it, or are we using it because we need it? This relates to some of our readings which state that technology should be used to enhance services to students, not to replace services. Are colleges in a competition to see who can utilize the most technology the fastest? --Krdangel 23:39, 9 November 2006 (EST)

Do I really want to be this connected? Right now, I am considering replacing my cell phone and my palm pilot with a smart phone. That would allow me to have a phone/PDA/email/text message/internet all at my fingertips any where I go. On one hand, that's great when I'm working but away from my office and have a need for that connection. But do I want that level of connectivity (and that size of a phone) when I am at my kid'soccer game? If I have it, will I be enticed to check work email at times when now I wouldn't consider checking it? Will work and home life become more integrated than they already are for me? I just don't know...--Jrmountz 16:11, 17 December 2006 (EST)
