Our Initial Questions About Language and Teaching Language

Prompt: What are some things you'd like to know about language and teaching it? What are you curious about? Interested in? Want to know? Need to know? Note: Language as in language, language variation, dialect, grammar, mechanics, etc. rather than other components of English or the collective English language arts.

Initial questions from class discussion 8/28/08: What are some of the limitations to language in the classroom? What about taboo language in the classroom? To what extent is slang acceptable in the classroom? What makes words taboo? How do you distinguish between what is colloquial and what is standard? Who do you teach students to know what language is appropriate? What is the word of the year? (Archivist, C. Baum)

This related wiki page, Initial Questions About Language, includes our revised initial questions about language as well as links to additional wiki pages where those questions are further considered, developed, explored, and, perhaps, answered.
