Welcome! This wiki contains work, ideas, and discussion in progress related to the ECI 430 English language arts and ECI 435 social studies methods courses experience. It is used in conjunction with the NLC ECI 430/435 Group Ning. It is also used to support the ECI 496 MSL Senior Seminar.

Easy Reader Book Sentence Composing Activity: You may download each other's initial drafts of revising an easy reader book using sentence composing strategies and brushstrokes. Note that these are first drafts, and they also include my feedback, using both the P-Q-S Method (facilitated by the Comments and Track Changes functions in Word) as well as color-coded highlighting to target specific feedback (green = strong writing; yellow = areas for possible revision). Reading / Writing Workshop F09
This wiki page, Defining Reading / Writing Workshop F09, features our ideas about reading and writing workshop -- what we know in general, what the literature says, what we're seeing in the field, and what we've experienced ourselves as students.
Interestingly, while the workshop approach has long been recognized as a feature of the middle grades English language arts classroom, this August, 2009 New York Times article, "A New Assignment: Pick Books You Like" highlights the workshop strategy as a new approach.

Adventures in Early America
Below are chapter summaries from Tony Horwitz's book A Voyage Long and Strange. for more on the book see http://www.tonyhorwitz.com/books/voyage-long-and-strange.php
In this work, students in an undergraduate social studies methods class and a graduate class focused on contemporary issues in social studies considered topics from the history of European exploration in North America and interpreted these topics through multiple historical lenses.
The wiki articles listed below included the following.
1. Summary of the overall idea of the work which is to review the chapter in Horwitz book, consider additional sources on the topic, read additional secondary textbook information about the topic, and analyze/interpret two images using the three secondary sources on the topic. The three sources are from Marcius Willson, a self-selected turn of the century textbook source, and Horwitz.
Marcius Willson American History published in 1847 and available here from Google Books.
2. Analysis, using another secondary source from around the turn of the 20th century up through 1930. (sources available at Goggle Books at [1] and search American History. Make sure you use the pull down menu at the top to limit your results to “View full only.”)
3. The analysis of two images using three lens that reflect the work of Willson, a self-selected turn of the century source, and Horwitz. The first image is from Alan C. Collins 1935/1962 textbook titled The Story of America in Pictures. Images from the book are online. This analysis includes descriptions of the image given the perspectives of three authors Willson, a self-selected turn of the century source, and Horwitz.
4. A second analysis of an image using Willson, on a selected turn of the century textbook source, and Horwitz.
These summaries are being extended using additional sources on American history as lenses for cross examination. Among the additional sources are illustrations from a 1935/1962 textbook by Alan C. Collins titled The Story of America in Pictures. Images from the book are online here. As well as an American History by Marcius Willson published in 1847 and available here from Google Books
