Growing up as one of many children, Bram Stoker's family would be not have been labeled as part of the upper class. Stoker's father worked for the Irish civil service. Charlotte Stoker, Bram Stoker's mother, did not work because she had to stay at home and take care of the children.
Working Life
Stoker had many jobs as part of his working life. He worked for the Irish civil service like his father but he had higher aspirations in life. Bram Stoker worked as a drama critic and this led to him meeting Walt Whitman. Later in life he became good friends with Henry Irving and he was the actor-manager of Irving's theater. Bram Stoker maintained this position for twenty-seven years from 1878 until 1905.
