Each student will build one wiki page on a major Victorian author, using topics based on chapters of Sally Mitchell's Daily Life in Victorian England. Every week, every student should submit a brief essay on the author and a highly specific aspect of the week's topic.
Each essay should incorporate the following:
- an excerpt from writing by that author about the topic;
- an excerpt from an authoritative reference or secondary source about that author and/or topic;
- an excerpt from contemporary writing related to that author and/or topic, for historical context; and
- an image (or audio) from the period related to the author and/or topic, for more historical context.
For instance, after we read the chapter on "Class, Tradition, and Money," you will write about your author and some aspect of class, tradition, or money. Dickens wrote about debtors' prisons in some of his novels, and you might find out from a reference source that Charles Dickens's father was imprisoned for debt in a debtors' prison. Historical context material could include a Victorian description of a debtors' prison and/or a picture of one.
Your chief goal for this assignment is to contribute 1) new primary material to the web and 2) new insight into your author's work and into the Victorian period. Imagine that you are writing for someone who has already read the Wikipedia entry for your author and wants to find out a great deal more, something new and original and interesting. Be creative, and be accurate.
