Overview Surrounding Military Regimes in El Salvador

El Salvador has been under military regime for most of the country’s existence. As with other Latin American countries, socioeconomic and sociopolitical issues were the underlying causes of these governmental cycles. Once in power, many dictatorships obtained support from wealthy in order to "fix" elections and remain in control. The most notable military leader in El Salvador was Maximiliano Martinez. The last military president in office in El Salvador was in 1979. In 1989, Alfredo Chistiani was elected, who pledged to bring the country peace.
