GIS Faculty Mission Statement
(One of the topics that surfaced at our meeting on 2/7/2007 was the goals of the GIS Faculty and how they could be expanded beyond the focus on curriculum to become a more active collaborative environment for research. I invite you to elaborate here.)
Program Name
Since we're developing a new program in a new field of science, it's not immediately obvious what we should call it. Suggested names and arguments for/against:
- GISc&T (Geographic Information Science & Technology), the term being used by the UCGIS [1], has name recognition.
- Geospatial Science may be more effective at focusing attention on the computational part. Do we want to be more general than "geography"?
- GIS (Geographic Information Science) is what we'll use for now on this site, since it's easy to type, but it has the confusion of being identified with Geographic Information Systems.
- Geospatial Information Science
- Geospatial Technologies - provides a name focused on the geographical aspectic of spatial variability and the technologies available for mapping, interpreting and managing that variability...a shortened version of GISc&T.
Curriculum Topics
- GIS Fall 2007 Program Changes to the graduate certificate in GIS and the graduate minor in GIS were approved on 2/7/2007.
- Proposed programs for 2008
- (Proposed) Curriculum for Undergraduate Minor in GIS
- What computing coursework should be required in the undergraduate Minor?
- CSC 114/116?
- CSC 200?
- MA 324?
- What computing coursework should be required in the undergraduate Minor?
- (Proposed) Graduate Certificate in GIS
- (Proposed) Master's in GIS
- (Proposed) Ph.D. in GIS
- Should the Ph.D curriculum contain specializations?
- GIS Graduate Level Electives
- This List of Graduate Research GIS Topics, compiled by Dr. Helena Mitasova, was used to choose the electives.
Planning Proposal Documents
These are rough drafts of documents describing the proposed programs, including motivation, purpose, curriculum, and funding. At the meeting on 2/7/2007, we invited interested GIS faculty to participate in the revision of these documents. Final drafts will be submitted to the Board of Education for review.

GIS Faculty Blog
To facilitate more discourse, we have also created a GIS Faculty Blog. GIS Faculty may post new topics by:
- First, register at wolfblog (basically just enter your username).
- Second, email Laura Tateosian (lgtateos@unity.ncsu.edu) with your request to be an author on GIS Faculty Blog.
