Purpose & Mission
The GLBT-Community Alliance is NC State University’s student group dedicated to promoting equality and unity for Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, Intersex, Questioning, and Straight Ally students, faculty, and staff on our campus and in our community. Our goal is to provide supportive and proactive educational and social events for our diverse campus body.
The group is a safe and welcoming space for people of all sexual orientations, gender identities, cultural backgrounds, life stages, and beliefs.
History
LGSU was founded in 1988 as the first student organization dedicated to the needs of LGBT students at NCSU. Initially established to provide a social network for LGBT persons, BGLA grew into a role that provided both social activities as well as advocacy for the community. BGLA continued to grow throughout the 1990s helping to establish groups at UNC-Chapel Hill and Duke. In the early part of this decade BGLA championed discrimination policy changes made under Chancellor Mary Anne Fox, and helped draft a university response to LGBT aimed violence in the wake of the Matthew Shepard tragedy. In 2007, AEGIS worked with staff members in the Department of Student Affairs in the foundation of the GLBT Center.
