Panama Invasion in 1989 (Operation Just Cause)

  • There were 4 primary reasons for the invasion
   1. Safeguarding the lives of US citizens and Panamanians
   2. Defending human rightsn and democacy
   3. Combating drug trafficking
   4. Protecting the integrity of the Torrijos-Carter Treaties.
  • Manuel Noriega headed an efficient narcomilitaristic regime that was involved in drug trafficking, arms smuggling, money laundering and the ruthless oppression of the citizens of Panama.
  • Noreiga violated the Panamanian-American treaties regarding the use and protection of the Panama Canal.
  • In February 1988, the Reagan-Bush campaign declared drugs dangers to the American society and at this time indicted Noriega on drug trafficking charges.
  • As early as 1971, Noriega was involved in the CIA, Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) and had allies in the Department of Defense. As a result, the US overlooked his connection to arms smuggling and drug trafficking because of the intelligence he provide them against the Sandinistas in Nicaragua.

  • The relationship between Latin America and the US became even more strained
  • Many Latin American countries felt the US would overturn the Torrijos-Carter which promised to turn over possess of the Panama Canal December 31, 1999.
  • About 2,700 families that were displaced by the Chorrillo fire were each given $6,500 by the United States to build a new house or apartment in selected areas in or near the city.
  • Free election have been reestablished.
