FERPA

First, if this course is a Registration and Records course FERPA issues must be considered whenever you let someone into your class who is not registered for the class or teaching the class.

How to check if a person has an account in Moodle

NCSU faculty, staff, and students can go to http://moodlepilot.ncsu.edu and type in their Unity ID and password in the login section. If you have an account you will be let in. If you do not you will receive an error.

Non-NCSU people can go to http://moodlepilot.ncsu.edu and type in your self-created ID and password. If you have an account you will be let in. If you do not you will receive an error.

Teachers already in Moodle can check if a person has an account by going to any of their courses, going to the Assign Roles section of their Administration block, and searching for the person's name when trying to add a new student.

Getting an account in Moodle

NCSU Faculty, Staff and Students should not request an account. Your account is your Unity ID and password. If you are having problems logging in

  1. Check that your password is correct
  2. If you are still having problems contact learntech@ncsu.edu

Non-NCSU users should create an account themselves at http://moodlepilot.ncsu.edu/login/signup.php.

I want to enroll my students who signed up for my class through Registration and Records

After you request a Moodle space for your Registration and Records course, Moodle will synchronize your Registration and Records class roll with the Moodle class roll. Changes in Registration and Records will be reflected in Moodle within 24 hours.

I want to add someone else as a teacher to my Moodle course

For Registration and Records Courses

  1. If you do not see the "NC State Course Tools" block
    1. Turn editing on
    2. Just below the blocks on the right side of your page in the "Add..." drop down menu choose "NC State Course Tools"
  2. Begin typing the name of the person you want to add as a teacher in your course.
  3. As the block auto-completes, click on the name of the person you want to add.

NOTE: All teachers with any percent effort in the class will automatically be added to the course, even if they are listed with 0% effort with R&R.

For All Other Courses

All requests to add additional teachers to a Moodle course should be sent to learntech@ncsu.edu.

I want to add a Teaching Assistant to my Moodle course

If you want to add someone to your course as a teaching assistant so they can help grade activities and interact with students you can add them into the role of "Non-editing teacher". To do this.

  1. Go to your course in Moodle
  2. In the "Administration" block click on "Assign roles"
  3. Click on the role "Non-editing teacher"
  4. Search for the person to add by typing their name in the right-hand column search box.
  5. After finding them click on their name and click the "Add" button.

If you want to add a Teaching Assistant who can edit your course content you will need to add them as a Teacher. Please see the above instructions for how to do that.

I want to add an NCSU person to a course in Moodle

The NCSU person you wish to add must have an account created in Moodle. (See "How to check if a person has an account in Moodle") If they do not have an account they must send a request to learntech@ncsu.edu. Their login will be their Unity ID and password. NCSU people should not create their own account within Moodle.

Once they have an account in Moodle the instructor can add them to the class in the "Student" role by going to the "Assign Roles" area of their course's Administration block.

I want to add a non-NCSU person to a course in Moodle and have that person participate in the course like a student

The person must first have an account in Moodle. (See "How to check if a person has an account in Moodle") If they do not have an account they must create an account themselves at http://moodlepilot.ncsu.edu/login/signup.php.

Once they have an account in Moodle the instructor can add them to the class in the "Student" role by going to the "Assign Roles" area of their course's Administration block.

I want to allow anyone in the world to enter my course in Moodle and have that person browse through my course, but not engage in any activities like discussion boards and quizzes or receive grades. (Guest access)

First, you must setup Guest Access for your course. In your course go to the Settings in your Administration block. Make the following settings:

Course enrollable: Yes or Date Range
Availability: This course is available to students
Guest access: Allow guests without the key

You will then need to provide the person with the URL for your course. This is the URL in the browser when you are viewing the main page for your Moodle course. When the guest follows the link you send they will be given the option to login as a guest.
