IDEAS - Intelligent Dialogue on Economics and Society

This page will host the member-edited constitution and mission of IDEAS.



Mission

The mission of IDEAS is to encourage intellectual debate on NCSU's campus in the areas of economics and the traditional social sciences. An intelligent dialogue is essential to the development and perpetuation of a quality academic atmosphere. This organization will endeavor to improve its members in their social awareness and in their development of analytical thinking through the reactive (as opposed to traditionally passive) study of current events and history.

This is an example copied from the University of Notre Dame and is a work in progress until this disclaimer is removed.

The Constitution and Bylaws of the club for Intelligent Dialogue on Economics and Society

Article I. NAME

The name of this club shall be the "Intelligent Dialogue on Economics and Society" (IDEAS).

Article II. PURPOSE

The purpose of IDEAS shall be to encourage intellectual debate on NCSU's campus in the areas of economics and the traditional social sciences. IDEAS will work toward its goals by:

  1. coordinating a regular series of dinner discussions of contemporary or historical issues, featuring commentary, guest lecturers, and debate.
  2. establishing a membership based upon merit and informed global citizenship.providing a means of open dialogue to the entire community.
  3. providing a means of open dialogue to the entire community.

Article III. MEMBERSHIP

Section 1. Full membership in IDEAS shall carry all privelages associated with our organization, including home meetings, and shall be extended by invitation only to undergraduates, graduate students, faculty and friends of North Carolina State University. Prospective members will express interest in joining IDEAS, afterwhich they will be voted into or rejected by the organization by a simple majority after open discussion of their merits as a scholar, intellectual, or debator, their character, and a recommendation by at least two other members.

Section 2. Associate membership in IDEAS shall carry all privelages associated with our ogranization, except home meetings and voting privelages, and shall be extended to any interested undergraduates, graduate students, faculty and friends of North Carolina State University and surrounding collegs and universities. Prospective members shall be considered associate members through freely and actively particpating in the intellectual dialogue of our organization.

Section 3. Special invitation shall be sent from time to time, as deemed necessary and shall be extended to individuals for the purposes of lecturing a home meeting, writing a guest column, or any other purposed deemed appropriate by a simple majority vote of the full membership.

Section 4. Membership status may change at any time following a simple majority vote, except in the case of demotion to associate member status which will require a two-thirds majority vote.

Article IV. MEMBERSHIP FEES

There will be no annual or semi-annual dues required to remain an active member of IDEAS. You're good-faith-effor to host a meeting when requested and if able is all that is required to be a part of our organization. There will be no monies held by our organization and all transactions, contracts, and disputes between members shall exist or be otherwise settled outside the organization.

Article V. OFFICERS

Section 1. There shall be no formal offices in IDEAS, with the exception of Chief Coordinator. Candidates shall volunteer for this position. In the event of dual candidacy with no concession, the office shall come to a simple majority vote. The Chief Coordinator's duties include:

  1. Coordinating meetings
  2. Maintaining the calendar
  3. Adminstering the blog and wiki
  4. Moderating the listserv
  5. Introducing lecturers
  6. Acting as spokesperson of the club
  7. Meeting regularly with the Advisor
  8. Chairing executive/business meetings

Section 2. As he/she/they have taken responsibility of hosting home meetings, the hosts shall also enjoy the privelage of chairing and moderating the home meetings and discussions. Other pivelages may include:

  1. Setting the topic of discussion for home meetings
  2. Reserving the right to first comment or provide a position on the topic

Section 3. All full members shall be considered Members of the Board in their cpacity to attend business meetings and assist the Cheif Coordinator with the execution of his duties as may become necessary.

Article VI. ADVISOR

 	Section 1. The Club Officers shall unanimously agree upon and appoint an advisor no later than April 1 to serve a term from May 1 - April 30.
 	Section 2. The Club Advisor must be a full-time Notre Dame faculty member or administrator.
 	Section 3. The Club Advisor's duties shall include:
 	  	

A. Meeting with the club officers on a regular basis. B. Attending club meetings and club activities. C. Keeping abreast of club issues and intentions. D. Meeting with the Treasurer on a monthly basis to review account balances and financial transactions. E. Assisting with the implementation of an officer transition program.

 	Section 4. The Advisor shall be an ex-officio member of the club, and as such, shall not have voting rights.
 	Section 5. The Advisor shall have veto power over any decision made by the club which is in direct violation of University policy. This authority shall be used only in circumstances where the club officers knowingly intend to violate University policy.

Article IX. MEETINGS

 	Section 1. The club shall meet at least once per month. A listing of meeting dates shall be established by the Club Officers and shall be posted on the DCND web site no later than September 1.
 	Section 2. Only active student members may vote at meetings.
 	Section 3. In the event that an emergency meeting of the club needs to be held, the President of the club shall have the authority to call such meetings. All officers must agree in advance to the emergency meeting and at least 24 hours notice must be provided to all active members by sending out both a voicemail and e-mail. Communication of emergency meetings will be the responsibility of the Club Secretary.
 	 


Article X. DISBURSEMENT OF FUNDS

 	Section 1. All disbursements of funds must be approved by the Treasurer and Advisor.
 	Section 2. Reimbursement for expenditures will only be accepted for members who have retained an original, itemized receipt and a description of the expense incurred.
 	Section 3. Any expenditure in excess of $200 must be approved by a majority of the Club Officers.
 	Section 4. All financial transactions of the Club will be managed through the University of Notre Dame's accounting system, as stipulated by the Student Union Treasurer's Office.
 	Section 5. Only the Club Officers and the Club Advisor shall have the ability to charge expenses to the Club via the University's account charge system.


Article XI. AMENDMENTS

 	Section 1. Amendments may be made to this constitution at any time by a two-thirds vote of the active club membership.
 	Section 2. Members interested in proposing amendments to the constitution must submit the proposed amendment to the President no later than ten days before the Club's next meeting.
 	Section 3. The proposed amendment shall be presented via e-mail to the active club membership no later than five days before the meeting where the amendment will be debated.
 	Section 4. Upon receiving a two-thirds affirmative vote in favor on a constitutional amendment/revision, the President shall submit the amendment/revision in writing to the Student Activities Office for review/approval.


Article XII. AFFILIATION WITH THE NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF DOMER CLUBS (NADC)

 	Section 1. The Domer Club of Notre Dame is affiliated with the National Association of Domer Clubs (NADC), a national organization which fosters the development of student-initiated college/university leadership programs.
 	Section 2. When in conflict, University of Notre Dame policy shall supersede the policy of the National Association of Domer Clubs.
