Introduction

The US-Mexican war was fought for about 26 months. All of the battles took place on Mexican soil. The Mexican troops, led by General Ampudia and General Santa Anna vastly outnumbered the US troops, led by General Taylor, but the US troops managed to defeat the Mexican troops in nearly every battle. These battles were chosen because of the significance to the war as a whole.

The Battle of Palo Alto

The Battle of Monterrey

The Battle of Buena Vista

The Battle of Cerro Gordo

The Battle of Molino del Rey

The Battle of Chapultepec

The Battle of Mexico City

Questions for Thought

  1. The Mexican army outnumbered the US army in nearly every battle, yet they lost nearly every battle as well. Why do you think the Mexican army suffered so badly?
  2. What could they have done better?
  3. Do you think location affected the outcome of these battles?
