Einstein, Podolsky, and Rosen felt that the formulation of quantum mechanics did not accurately describe reality and that certain hidden variables needed to be introduced into the theory to make it complete. John S. Bell used the assumptions of local hidden variable theory to derive inequalities which certain classes of experiments must satisfy. Quantum mechanical considerations of such systems give predictions that disagree with these inequalities. Experiments can therefore be developed to test the completeness of quantum theory in this respect. Recent experiments indicate that a local hidden variable theory is not needed and that quantum mechanical treatment of these systems is sufficient and complete.
