Peru is a presidential representative democratic republic with a multi-party system. The President is the head of state and government. The elected President serves a five year term, and may not serve consecutive terms. The President designates the Prime Minister and, with his advice, the rest of the Council of Ministers--similar to the United States' Executive Cabinet.
Congress is unicameral, with 120 members elected for five year terms.
