Review articles

Review articles provide summaries of the current state of research on a topic. These differ from journal articles that present new research. Researchers and students may find them valuable for getting an overview of a research topic. They can often be more readable than research articles, and may have more currency and focus than books.

Finding review articles

Many databases allow you to isolate review articles. Usually this is found in the Advanced Search or presented as a way to filter the results. See specific examples below or Ask A Librarian for help.

Web of Science

In Web of Science you can limit your initial search using the Advanced Search function, or refine your results using the refinement options in the left column:

SciFinder Scholar

When doing a literature search in SciFinder Scholar, click the Filters button to see options. You can check the Review Articles box here. Or after you've done an initial search, use the refine tool to refine by document type, and select review articles.
