Tech Solutions for Saving Money

From WolfWikis

Jump to: navigation, search

Our campus is dealing with a major economic crisis. Everyone is looking for ways to cut back, share resources, be more efficient. Here are some ideas from a technology perspective. Some of these practices are also environmentally friendly.

This wiki was created as a resource for staff in the Division of Student Affairs, but others on campus are welcome to share their ideas.

  • Reduce printing overall (instead of distributing many copies, put content on bulletin boards, the web or in email messages)
  • Reduce color printing (color is nice, but b/w is often sufficient)
  • Adjust mobile device plans (share/reduce minutes, wait to upgrade hardware)
  • Clean up documents on your shared and home directories to reduce costs of server space (though still use good habits where file storage is concerned with regard to file retention, privacy of student/employee records)
  • Turn off equipment at the end of the day, and especially before leaving for weekends and vacations
  • Plug your electronic devices into a surge protector. This will extend the life of the hardware.
  • Utlize university surplus
    • Division LANTechs should send surplus announcements to Leslie Dare for distribution to other Division LANTechs; let's share with each other first before offering up surplus to other campus LANTechs
    • Go "shopping" at the Surplus Warehouse (Monday - Thursday); you will be amazed at the amount of equipment ready to live a new life in your office!
  • Utilize Division equipment available for check-out instead of purchasing your own equipment. (Link coming soon.)
