Objective 1: Describe the process of secession and the formation of the Confederacy.
Objective 2: Examine key political ideology and political parties of the Confederacy and the influences on the war.
Activities and Procedures:
Activity 1: Students will be placed in groups that will be decided before class. They will be grouped with all different ability levels. They will be given a map to color the states and order them by the number they seceeded. They will work in groups because some studnets may be confused on what were the Confederate states and the number they seceeded. They have their classmates to help them through the process.
Activity 2: The class will be separated into political parties and voters. The students that are political parties (may work in pairs) get up in front of the classrooms and state their platforms concerning the war. Then after everyone has gone the other students will vote. At the end of class we will talley the votes and see who won. You can then talk about the differences between voting then compared to now. Also the similarities. You can relate this to the election of 2006 so the studnetes have an understanding of current events and affairs. The students who didn't do a platform must write in their journals about what their platform would have been while the students that did have a platform will reflect about their experience and why they did choose that platform.
Map: We have decided to do this activity in the beginning of class. It will be a follow up activity from what was taught the previous class. The students will be placed in groups according to ability level- exceeding students, average students, and below level students. They will spend the first ten minutes of class doing the map. The students will collaboratively put together the map. They will color each sate differently depending on the number the state seceeded. They will create a legend representing the order they secceded. The studnts will work in groups becuase some studnets may be confused on what were the Confederate states and when and how they secceeded. They have their classmates there to help them through the process. Many times students can explain information better to the student than the teacher can.
