Of the various game engines available, Torque may be the one that is simultaneously easiest to develop for, most powerful and easiest to distribute.

So far with 15-20 man hours I have been able to learn how to create a level, code basic interactions, create a GUI, import custom models and textures, and make the bare bones of what we may call a full game.

For those less familiar with game development, this is blisteringly fast. I have often spent up to the deadline for previous projects on other engines hitting my head against the wall trying to figure out part of the visual content pipeline or scripting a feature. Being able to do it from day 1 is a feat not for myself as much as for the Torque engine itself. It comes with a tutorial PDF that guides you through all these processes and within an afternoon, most people should be able to get a basic grasp of the concepts that go into game development on Torque.
