The wiki software makes it possible to put each page in one or more categories.

Purpose
To faciliate accessibility of all pages through a hierarchical system of categories, i.e. a different route than searching for a page name.
Creating and tagging
Putting a page into a category is pretty simple. Chose a proper name for the category (or one that already exists), say 'whatever' and type [[category:whatever]] at the bottom of the page. (Actually it does not really matter where you put it, but it is wiki-custom to put it at the bottom).
Once you save the page either a red or a blue link appears at the bottom or the page, saying
- Category:whatever
- Category:whatever
Editing the category page
If the link is red, please click on it. On the edit page that pops up give a brief description of what the whatever-category is all supposed to be about. Once that has happened the link will turn blue and any page that is tagged with [[category:whatever]] will be listed on the category page.
Alphabetizing
The listing on the category page is alphabetical, but in cases that a different order is desired a pipe | symbol can be used to change the order.
E.g. if the tagged page is called Carnot cycles, a category tag like [[category:thermodynamics|heat]] will alphabetize Carnot cycles under the h of heat on the category:thermodynamics page.
Hierarchies
It is possible and even desirable to tag the category page itself with a category tag, e.g. by adding [[category:everything]] to the * Category:whatever page. This way a hierarchical system of categories can be designed. The 'whatever' category will now appear as a subcategory on the 'everything' category page.
Obviously for such a hierarchy to function properly it is imperative to choose category names with great care.
Course categories
An obvious way to do this is to add the course number the page is associated with to the page as a category, e.g. as [[category:CH434]]. On the CH434 category page put [[category:CH]] and on the CH category page put [[category:courses]]. This way a general index is created that shows which pages belong to which courses. Have a look at category:courses what that looks like. Is your course part of the system yet?
Templates
See Tips\templates for an introduction to templates. It is possible to put a category statement inside a template. That way any page that is tagged with a template is automatically tagged with the same category. This prevents misspellings and such.
